I remember watching Soul Train when I was a kid around this time and being sort of intimidated by it... all those scary black people with their big 'fros and weird clothes and sexy, sexy dance moves. I remember surreptitiously watching, afraid my dad would walk into the room and catch me admiring these miscreants. I'd never met a black person when this aired (1973; I was eleven). I'd only seen a few from the safety of our car ("Lock the doors, kids") as we drove through Chicago on visits to my grandparents. Now it just seems like the most innocent, Fat Albert-y fun, and gives me a big old cheek-straining smile. Man, I gotta add some a them moves to my mortify-Eli-in-the-living-room-in-front-of-his-friends dance repertoire! (Thanks, Taylor!)
