Right around my birthday two things (among others) happen every year: the lilacs bloom and fuzzy yellow goslings appear. This family and several others were gorging themselves on new grass shoots beside the road on my way to work this morning.
When I was a kid, the sighting of a Canadian Goose (or Honker, as many call them) was a real rarity. My Dad told me that at one time they were thought to be extinct. Now they have adapted to humans and are everywhere, and in fact are considered by many naturalists to be a "weed species."
Yes, they do seem to sprout from the proverbial cracks in the sidewalk, but they sure are magnificent (and for a week or two, cute) weeds!
