Maybe they did, and the store owner said "Yes, I mean 'tobacco,' but I want it spelled 'tabacco.' And yes, we sell magazines AND magazine accessories, such as sales racks and protective covers. You insult me with your questions; just do as you're told!" I can't say for sure, but I'm thinking that's how it went down.
